The History of EDSU
The European Deaf Students' Union (EDSU) was founded in 2011 by Timothy Rowies from Belgium, who recognized the need for a platform dedicated to deaf students in Europe. In December of that year, the idea for EDSU was formally proposed during a Board meeting of the European Union of the Deaf Youth (EUDY) in Brussels. It was during this meeting that the concept of establishing a working group was discussed, which would later be presented at the EUDY General Assembly in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On July 14, 2012, EDSU received important recognition when it was officially approved as a working group under EUDY. This approval came from 25 full members during the EUDY General Assembly, marking a significant step forward for the organization. EDSU was now equipped to advocate for the interests of deaf students across Europe and to provide them with a unified voice.
The organization's evolution continued, and on July 11, 2014, EDSU became an independent organization. This milestone was achieved during the EUDY General Assembly held in Burgas, Bulgaria. Gaining independence allowed EDSU to develop its own identity and mission, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities faced by deaf students.
Since its establishment, EDSU has dedicated itself to empowering deaf students, advocating for their rights, and fostering an inclusive educational environment. Through various initiatives and programs, EDSU works to ensure that deaf students are heard, supported, and represented at both national and international levels.
Up til now, there are five full members (National Deaf Students’ Unions) being part of EDSU: viStudis (Germany), ESF (France), VÖGS (Austria), FAG (Poland) and DiHU (Norway).
